Solar

A solar powered electric reefer trailer is a configuration where a reefer is fitted with solar panels o the roof which are then used to generate energy for the built-in batteries which then supply the refrigeration system with power.

In the mobility sector, a relatively unproven idea involves utilizing solar panels to recharge vehicle batteries. There are promising concepts that aim to harness solar energy to charge batteries that power vehicle engines. These solar panels can be strategically positioned on the top or sides of a trailer, generating electrical power. Similar to the concept of an energy axle, these solar panels can transfer power to the batteries, extending the operational life of refrigeration units.

According to Sono Motors, integrating solar panels can provide an additional 9.8kW of power to the trailer's refrigeration unit, potentially resulting in cost savings and a reduction in carbon emissions.

Solar e-reefer TIP

TIP Group, in collaboration with Valoe Corporation and Frigoscandia, initiated a pilot project in the Nordics, deploying a solar-powered refrigerated trailer to promote cleaner road freight. The overarching goal is to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, thereby advancing TIP's environmental sustainability agenda in the refrigerated transport sector.

“The first results of the solar-powered e-reefer with Valoe are very promising.” explains Rogier Laan, Vice President Sales and Marketing at TIP Group.

Another initiative saw TIP partnering with Sunswap to launch “Endurance," a solar and battery-powered TRU set for a twelve-month pilot starting in 2024.

Once the results will confirm the effectiveness of this solution, TIP will make it available to its customers. This solution will be the best for customers that have limited accessibility to grid connection, with trailers that are often exposed to light when parked.

Battery Only

Battery Only

A battery only electric reefer trailer, is where a battery with charging plug provides the energy to the refrigeration system, similar to a private electric vehicle. The recharging occurs while the vehicle is stationary, during loading/unloading or when parked. To enable this a three-phase power connection is utilized, commonly found most workshops, DCs or loading/unloading location.
Energy Recuperation Axle

Energy Recuperation Axle

An energy recovery axle provides energy to the refrigeration system through a special type of axle that generates energy during braking. When the vehicle is moving, the energy recovery axle charges the battery which then powers the refrigeration system.
